How to Style a Pleated Skirt

It’s no secret that we love history and where styles and trends originate.  Pleats have been around for so long.  A timeless style, it has been all over the runways for a few years now and trending once again for this season.  You would be surprised to know how old this design actually is…  ok here it comes – history 101, pleat edition.  (Promise it will be brief — we just can’t help ourselves sometimes)  The process of the ‘Plisse,’ or a permanent crinkled effect to material, dates back to the Ancient Egyptians – thousands of years ago.  It was a very time consuming process, was done by hand and every time the particular piece of clothing got wet or was washed the pleats would disappear and the entire process would have to be started all over again.  It was basically eggs poured over linen that was dried in position (with a grooved wood board) out in the sun.  This process was quite popular with the Greeks and Romans and was only worn by the wealthy and members of the clergy at this time. Fast forward to modern times – where machines do all the work and we as consumers, have this fabulous design readily available to us!  Yay!

Lauren and I are going to show you different ways to style this fun and stylish H&M ‘knife’ pleated skirt, as it is called.  Here we go!  (Please note – all outfit links will appear the bottom of post)

Look #1 – Denim
This first look brings in our love of denim.  Denim just adds a crisp look to any outfit and a pleated skirt is no different.  It gives the skirt a little bit of a casual look, perfect for work or play.  I paired with low key accessories and my basic nude strap heels.  For chillier evenings throw on a sweater blazer and you are all set!  There’s the twirl again – lol

Look #2 – Sweater
Who loves a good chunky sweater?  Well, we do.  This look is effortless, comfortable and chic.  The sleeves on this sweater have the best detail because they actually balloon at the wrist!  Lauren styled with basic but fabulous pieces, such as a beautiful Camelia Roma bag and black satin booties.

Look #3 – Knotted Tee
Another way to achieve an updated look with this pleated midi skirt would be a simple knotted tee.  No need to get fancy here – lol.  We are all about comfort and style.  Working moms continuously on the go require outfits that are easy and quick, but still stylish and fun!  Knotting, whether the denim above or the tee below, flatters the waistline.  It’s a comfortable way of showing off those beautiful curves ladies!  Also, I added a denim jacket with this outfit to give it that cool mom feel 😉  I’m not cool, quite dorky actually!

Look #4 – Moto Jacket
Here comes the edge!  Lauren rocked this look giving this classic and timeless skirt a push towards way cool mom.  This is perfect for a night out on the town or just dinner with the gals.  Lauren added our favorite summer heel – let’s face it, it’s still hot in the NY, so we can still get away wearing them.  To complete the look she added a lace cami, a super cute bag, and of course, a  fall staple – a moto jacket.
